EventPeckham Peace Blanket Launch
Join us to celebrate the installation of the Peckham Peace Blanket by Mhairi Macaulay in Peckham Library.
Produced as the result of an interactive artwork which took place at Peckham Space from the 8 August – 2 September 2012, the project was launched to coincide with the launch the Peckham Peace Wall, a new, permanent public artwork on Peckham Square. Both artworks celebrate the wall of post-it notes of love and respect for the area which grew on Rye Lane in response to the unrest of August 2011.
Artist Mhairi Macaulay, a student at Camberwell College of Arts, invited people of all ages to come into the gallery, stitch a message onto a felt square and add it to the growing number of messages on display in the gallery.
At the end of the project, more than 600 people had sewn messages of peace for the blanket. Seamstress Sarah Klymkiw stitched together a selection of these squares to form the final artwork which will be on display in Peckham Library with the kind permission of Southwark Council for the year of 2013.
The launch event takes place at Peckham Space, with group tours available to the Library to view the work throughout the event.
