Birungi Kawooya

Artists

Birungi Kawooya is a collage artist and art tutor researching ways of being well in community, inspired by nature, Black feminists and Afro somatic movement. She creates using paper, paint, sculpture, natural fibres and batik indigenous to Uganda.

In 2021 Peckham Platform commissioned Kawooya to lead one of her signature Mindful African Art workshops as part of a weekend of creative activity for The Message We Bring.

Kawooya believes that self expression is an important element of a life of joy, healing and rest; it is now crucial for her to reflect the importance of wellbeing in her work and she supports Sistah Space, a community-based organisation created to bridge the gap in domestic abuse services for African heritage women and girls.

“It has been such a joy learning about Birungi’s practice and seeing how her energy can transform a room of strangers into a space for laughter, focus and making. Her work is beautiful and playful, tapping into memories of celebratory fabrics and diaspora making home. She is a treasure and I can’t recommend her enough”

Nephertiti Oboshie Schandorf, Artistic Director of Peckham Platform
