The workshop was for people aged over 16 years old and aimed to promote a safe space for play, self-discovery, as well as individual and collective empowerment. The participants created a large collective mural using a variety of materials and African print fabrics, as a way to find their own creative expression.

The workshop was part of the Festival of Community taking place across two weekends in August 2023, to celebrate creativity, diversity, and community spirit.

What was Sites of Play?

Artists Birungi Kawooya and Lesley Asare invited us to explore Community, Play and Rest. Through gentle movement, the participants created a large collective mural using a variety of materials and African print fabrics. Held by a reflective soundscape, we explored the wisdom within our breath and bodies through gentle movement and explored what Community, Play and Rest look like to us.

What did the Festival of Community care about?

Cultivating Creativity

We encouraged all participants to engage their artistic side and nurture creativity in every form. We welcomed everyone into the space.

Community Unity

At the heart of the festival lay the spirit of togetherness. Festival of Community was a celebration of Peckham’s incredible diversity, and as partners we invited everyone – families, friends, and neighbours – to come together and revel in the shared enthusiasm of art.

Embrace Diversity

The festival proudly embraces all forms of art, welcoming creators from all backgrounds. During Peckham Platform’s workshop, Sites of Play, we aimed to provide a space that champions inclusivity, fostering a sense of belonging for all attendees.
