Barbara Majek

Artists

Majek is an interdisciplinary artist and researcher who experiments with the complexities of her bicultural identity.

She explores the tensions and alchemical process of the African diaspora experience using skills developed during her BA Textiles Embroidery degree at UAL and social science background in Sociology.

Her ideas draw influences from her identity as a Nigerian with a Yoruba heritage. Yoruba mythology has heavily shaped her approach to investigate sociocultural narratives and what these mean to communities and individuals. Majek’s research manifests as material, vibrant artworks, including traditional embroidery, hand-painting and printing techniques both from Western and Yoruba culture. In this way her process is documented for generations to come as cultural artefacts.

In 2021 Peckham Platform commissioned Majek for Sewn Together a creative project using textile and stitching as a methodology to explore identity.
