Nikolaj Bendix Skyum Larsen

Artists

Nikolaj Larsen works in a variety of media and materials to create visual responses to challenges within today’s society.

Migration and disempowerment are some of his main areas of research. Larsen’s work can be seen as visual anthropology with a profound need to understand and interpret his surroundings. His films occupy a space between art and documentary filmmaking, acting as filmic portraits which often explore people caught in politically and/or emotionally complex situations.

Between 2014 – 2016 the artist made the critically acclaimed installation, End of Dreams. It is a monument made in memory of the thousands of migrants who die in the Mediterranean whilst trying to come to Europe.

In 2012 Peckham Platform (then Peckham Space) exhibited Larsen’s 343 Perspectives, a multiple-screen film investigating themes of isolation and community through the viewpoints of south Londoners served by only one mode of public transport, the 343 bus. The exhibition of this new, commissioned artwork marked Larsen’s first solo exhibition in the UK.

His work was also part of the 2016 Peckham Platform Retrospective exhibition, a timeline of all 20 artists commissions realised by Peckham Platform between 2010 – 2016.
